2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra debut all-new designs, three new engines

Chevrolet today unveiled the all-new 2014 Silverado 1500 full-size pickup. New from hood to hitch, Silverado is engineered to be the strongest, smartest, and most capable Silverado ever.

The new Silverado builds on Chevrolet's 95 years of truck heritage, while raising the bar for full-size pickups. Among the many updates for 2014 are a new trio of powerful, efficient EcoTec3 engines; a stronger, quieter, more comfortable cab; revised steering, suspension and brakes; ingenious solutions for managing cargo in the bed and true truck capability for towing and hauling.

"Our customers rely on their trucks to meet the day-to-day challenges of earning a living, running a business and taking care of their families," said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. "Chevrolet is committed to giving truck customers the most-refined, best-engineered pickups in the market."

The 2014 Silverado will become part of Chevrolet's three-truck portfolio, designed to let customers select the right truck for their needs. It joins the Silverado 2500 and 3500 HD pickups, the ultimate tools for towing and hauling, which were new for the 2011 model year. Chevrolet is also developing an all-new Colorado midsize pickup, which will offer proven truck capability in a space- and fuel-efficient package.

Every detail of the 2014 Silverado 1500 was designed and engineered to meet the exacting requirements of full-size truck customers and to strengthen Chevrolet's reputation for building the most dependable, longest-lasting full-size trucks – trucks with the lowest overall cost of ownership.

"Don't let the work boots fool you. Truck customers are among the most discerning and demanding in the business," said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for full-size and midsize trucks.

"The designers and engineers who created the new Silverado share this passion for trucks. They have built this truck – and tested it to the extremes – to give customers the right tools for the tough jobs, and they have created dozens of solutions to the challenges truck customers encounter every day."

Car care tip - Clean your wiper blades often!

Road film and grime collect in the wiper blades. This causes the streaking of windshields. To eliminate this problem use a cloth moistened with glass cleaner. Make sure to thoroughly clean the side grove. Be careful not to damage the blade.

2013 NASCAR Chevrolet SS Unveiled

Chevrolet today opened a new chapter in its storied racing history, unveiling its eagerly anticipated 2013 NASCAR Chevrolet SS race car. Powered by the legendary small block V-8 engine, the rear-wheel drive performance sedan will be Chevrolet’s newest entry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, beginning with the 2013 SpeedWeeks in Daytona, Fla.

The new NASCAR race car closely resembles the all-new rear wheel drive V-8 Chevrolet SS performance sedan that will debut early next year.

“As a passionate race fan, the debut of the SS NASCAR race car is a genuinely exciting moment for me,” said GM North America President Mark Reuss. “With the SS, Chevrolet is delivering a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR race car that is very closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale, ensuring that our most loyal enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience the same thrill every day on the open road that our race car drivers enjoy on the track on race day.

“The Chevrolet SS also demonstrates how we are able to leverage our global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience,” Reuss said. “The specialized development and testing work done for the race car will certainly benefit the entire Chevrolet product lineup.”

The Chevrolet SS is the next in a long line of famed nameplates that Chevrolet has campaigned in NASCAR. It replaces Impala, which scored 151 wins from 1959-64 and 2007-12.

“We are looking forward to another exciting year of NASCAR competition and expect that the new SS race car, with some of the most skilled drivers on the circuit behind the wheel, will distinguish itself on the track,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports.

The Chevrolet SS will be a derivative of the award-winning global rear-wheel-drive architecture that spawns performance vehicles like Chevrolet Camaro and Holden’s upcoming VF Commodore. The limited production version of the Chevrolet SS will be a 2014 model and will arrive in dealer showrooms in late 2013. It is the first time in 17 years that Chevrolet will offer a rear-wheel-drive sedan for sale in the United States.

Chevrolet has long used the SS (Super Sport) designation on high-performance models of some of its most enduring nameplates. The SS designation first appeared in 1957 on a Corvette prototype race car built under the guidance of Zora Arkus-Duntov with the plan to enter it in the Le Mans 24-hour race.

The first production vehicle to be offered with an SS optional package was the 1961 Impala – 453 were built with the performance upgrades, which included a modified chassis and suspension, power brakes, a steering column mounted tachometer and unique wheels and tires.  The SS designation returned to the Chevrolet lineup in 2010 with the debut of the fifth-generation Camaro.

Chevrolet has 702 victories in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, more than any other manufacturer.  Fonty Flock earned the manufacturer’s first win on March 26, 1955, at Columbia, S.C. Five-time series champion Jimmie Johnson achieved Chevrolet’s 700th victory earlier this month at Texas Motor Speedway.

Chevrolet was America’s best-selling performance car brand in 2011 with Camaro and Corvette accounting for one out of every three sports cars sold in the United States.  The addition of the SS to the lineup is expected to further strengthen Chevrolet’s position as a leading performance brand.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design and high quality.

Car owners love the Volt, hate the Versa

00100065-0000-0000-0000-000000000000_00000065-06d9-0000-0000-000000000000_20121130134837_chevrolet-volt-black

Consumer Reports finds that many owners of hybrids and sports cars would buy the same models all over again.

Owners of the Chevrolet Volt love the plug-in hybrid so much that 92 percent of them would buy it again.

That score beat out Corvette and Porsche 911 owners by one percentage point, according to the latest owner satisfaction survey from Consumer Reports. Unlike the magazine's lengthy annual reliability report, the owner satisfaction survey is about time travel. Well, almost: The single-question survey asked owners of 2010 to 2013 models if they would buy the same vehicle if they could "do it all over again."

From the responses, which included more than 240 models and 350,000 specific vehicles, 44 cars ranked among the most satisfying. To achieve that rating, at least 80 percent of owners had to respond "definitely yes" to that hypothetical question.

Not surprisingly, most owners of fast cars were happy with their present lives. Buyers of the Chevrolet Camaro SS, Audi S4 and even the Mazda Miata scored 84 percent, and V8 versions of the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger scored 87 and 90 percent, respectively.

Owners of hybrids and electric cars, given their smug clouds, were of course in little doubt. In addition to the Volt, the Toyota Prius, Camry Hybrid and Nissan Leaf all scored 85 percent or higher. Even owners of the new Prius c, a car that Consumer Reports absolutely hates, scored 87 percent. Diesel owners were feeling good, too, with 80 percent cheering for the Volkswagen Golf TDI, but only 77 percent were confident they would buy the Audi A3 TDI.

Luxury car owners love the Audi A7 (90 percent), Lexus GS (89 percent) and 6-cylinder Audi A6 (88 percent). We would, too.

Then there are the people who hate their car and would change everything. Nissan Versa owners gave the survey's lowest satisfaction numbers, at just 49 percent. Many owners of the Mitsubishi Outlander, Suzuki SX4, Nissan Armada and V6 versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra also were desperate to go back in time. (Seriously, people, you really thought a V6 in a full-size GM pickup was a good idea?)

We could think of other life decisions in our past that we'd happily do "all over again." Then again, maybe we wouldn't. Or would we? Please, Consumer Reports, never ask this question again.
