2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra debut all-new designs, three new engines

Chevrolet today unveiled the all-new 2014 Silverado 1500 full-size pickup. New from hood to hitch, Silverado is engineered to be the strongest, smartest, and most capable Silverado ever.

The new Silverado builds on Chevrolet's 95 years of truck heritage, while raising the bar for full-size pickups. Among the many updates for 2014 are a new trio of powerful, efficient EcoTec3 engines; a stronger, quieter, more comfortable cab; revised steering, suspension and brakes; ingenious solutions for managing cargo in the bed and true truck capability for towing and hauling.

"Our customers rely on their trucks to meet the day-to-day challenges of earning a living, running a business and taking care of their families," said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. "Chevrolet is committed to giving truck customers the most-refined, best-engineered pickups in the market."

The 2014 Silverado will become part of Chevrolet's three-truck portfolio, designed to let customers select the right truck for their needs. It joins the Silverado 2500 and 3500 HD pickups, the ultimate tools for towing and hauling, which were new for the 2011 model year. Chevrolet is also developing an all-new Colorado midsize pickup, which will offer proven truck capability in a space- and fuel-efficient package.

Every detail of the 2014 Silverado 1500 was designed and engineered to meet the exacting requirements of full-size truck customers and to strengthen Chevrolet's reputation for building the most dependable, longest-lasting full-size trucks – trucks with the lowest overall cost of ownership.

"Don't let the work boots fool you. Truck customers are among the most discerning and demanding in the business," said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for full-size and midsize trucks.

"The designers and engineers who created the new Silverado share this passion for trucks. They have built this truck – and tested it to the extremes – to give customers the right tools for the tough jobs, and they have created dozens of solutions to the challenges truck customers encounter every day."

2013 NASCAR Chevrolet SS Unveiled

Chevrolet today opened a new chapter in its storied racing history, unveiling its eagerly anticipated 2013 NASCAR Chevrolet SS race car. Powered by the legendary small block V-8 engine, the rear-wheel drive performance sedan will be Chevrolet’s newest entry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, beginning with the 2013 SpeedWeeks in Daytona, Fla.

The new NASCAR race car closely resembles the all-new rear wheel drive V-8 Chevrolet SS performance sedan that will debut early next year.

“As a passionate race fan, the debut of the SS NASCAR race car is a genuinely exciting moment for me,” said GM North America President Mark Reuss. “With the SS, Chevrolet is delivering a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR race car that is very closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale, ensuring that our most loyal enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience the same thrill every day on the open road that our race car drivers enjoy on the track on race day.

“The Chevrolet SS also demonstrates how we are able to leverage our global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience,” Reuss said. “The specialized development and testing work done for the race car will certainly benefit the entire Chevrolet product lineup.”

The Chevrolet SS is the next in a long line of famed nameplates that Chevrolet has campaigned in NASCAR. It replaces Impala, which scored 151 wins from 1959-64 and 2007-12.

“We are looking forward to another exciting year of NASCAR competition and expect that the new SS race car, with some of the most skilled drivers on the circuit behind the wheel, will distinguish itself on the track,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports.

The Chevrolet SS will be a derivative of the award-winning global rear-wheel-drive architecture that spawns performance vehicles like Chevrolet Camaro and Holden’s upcoming VF Commodore. The limited production version of the Chevrolet SS will be a 2014 model and will arrive in dealer showrooms in late 2013. It is the first time in 17 years that Chevrolet will offer a rear-wheel-drive sedan for sale in the United States.

Chevrolet has long used the SS (Super Sport) designation on high-performance models of some of its most enduring nameplates. The SS designation first appeared in 1957 on a Corvette prototype race car built under the guidance of Zora Arkus-Duntov with the plan to enter it in the Le Mans 24-hour race.

The first production vehicle to be offered with an SS optional package was the 1961 Impala – 453 were built with the performance upgrades, which included a modified chassis and suspension, power brakes, a steering column mounted tachometer and unique wheels and tires.  The SS designation returned to the Chevrolet lineup in 2010 with the debut of the fifth-generation Camaro.

Chevrolet has 702 victories in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, more than any other manufacturer.  Fonty Flock earned the manufacturer’s first win on March 26, 1955, at Columbia, S.C. Five-time series champion Jimmie Johnson achieved Chevrolet’s 700th victory earlier this month at Texas Motor Speedway.

Chevrolet was America’s best-selling performance car brand in 2011 with Camaro and Corvette accounting for one out of every three sports cars sold in the United States.  The addition of the SS to the lineup is expected to further strengthen Chevrolet’s position as a leading performance brand.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design and high quality.

Car owners love the Volt, hate the Versa

00100065-0000-0000-0000-000000000000_00000065-06d9-0000-0000-000000000000_20121130134837_chevrolet-volt-black

Consumer Reports finds that many owners of hybrids and sports cars would buy the same models all over again.

Owners of the Chevrolet Volt love the plug-in hybrid so much that 92 percent of them would buy it again.

That score beat out Corvette and Porsche 911 owners by one percentage point, according to the latest owner satisfaction survey from Consumer Reports. Unlike the magazine's lengthy annual reliability report, the owner satisfaction survey is about time travel. Well, almost: The single-question survey asked owners of 2010 to 2013 models if they would buy the same vehicle if they could "do it all over again."

From the responses, which included more than 240 models and 350,000 specific vehicles, 44 cars ranked among the most satisfying. To achieve that rating, at least 80 percent of owners had to respond "definitely yes" to that hypothetical question.

Not surprisingly, most owners of fast cars were happy with their present lives. Buyers of the Chevrolet Camaro SS, Audi S4 and even the Mazda Miata scored 84 percent, and V8 versions of the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger scored 87 and 90 percent, respectively.

Owners of hybrids and electric cars, given their smug clouds, were of course in little doubt. In addition to the Volt, the Toyota Prius, Camry Hybrid and Nissan Leaf all scored 85 percent or higher. Even owners of the new Prius c, a car that Consumer Reports absolutely hates, scored 87 percent. Diesel owners were feeling good, too, with 80 percent cheering for the Volkswagen Golf TDI, but only 77 percent were confident they would buy the Audi A3 TDI.

Luxury car owners love the Audi A7 (90 percent), Lexus GS (89 percent) and 6-cylinder Audi A6 (88 percent). We would, too.

Then there are the people who hate their car and would change everything. Nissan Versa owners gave the survey's lowest satisfaction numbers, at just 49 percent. Many owners of the Mitsubishi Outlander, Suzuki SX4, Nissan Armada and V6 versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra also were desperate to go back in time. (Seriously, people, you really thought a V6 in a full-size GM pickup was a good idea?)

We could think of other life decisions in our past that we'd happily do "all over again." Then again, maybe we wouldn't. Or would we? Please, Consumer Reports, never ask this question again.

Car tip: Driving Safety Tips to Avoid an Accident

  • Don't allow children to fight or climb around in your car (they should be buckled in their seats at all times). One accidental bump or too much noise can easily distract you from concentrating on driving safely.
  • Cell phones can also take your focus away from the task at hand: arriving safely at your destination.
  • Avoid driving when you're tired. Be aware that some medications can cause drowsiness and make operating a vehicle very dangerous.
  • Always use caution when changing lanes. Cutting in front of someone, changing lanes too fast or not using your signals may cause an accident or upset other drivers.

Trailer Sway Control Standard on all Chevrolet Silverados

The 2013 Chevrolet Silverado is now better equipped to help prevent drivers and their trailers from uncontrolled trailer swinging with the advanced StabiliTrak® electronic stability control system with integrated trailer sway control.

Trailer sway control employs an angle sensor within the steering wheel assembly to measure the drivers intended yaw, or rotational movement around the axis of a vehicle, which determines the direction. During a sway incident, the sensor detects the driver’s intended yaw, while another sensor measures the actual yaw. The Electronic Brake Control Module compares both inputs and sends a signal to the Integrated Trailer Brake Control for action. The resulting action is to apply the trailer brakes and reduce the velocity. In more extreme conditions, the Integrated Trailer Brake Control will also signal the vehicle to apply its brakes until the oscillation stops.

“Silverado owners can rest assured that their trucks were built with their safety in mind and can tow with extra confidence thanks to trailer sway control which is always at the ready,” said Maria Rohrer, director of Marketing and Strategy, Chevrolet Trucks. “Trailer sway control is just one more way Silverado helps you stay prepared for whatever life throws at you.”

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks a year.  Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design, and high quality.

Chevrolet to Debut Spark EV at LA Auto Show

Advanced version of MyLink for 2014 Impala adds functionality

Chevrolet will unveil the plug-in electric version of the brand’s popular new Spark mini car at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month. The Spark EV is one of 13 new or significantly redesigned products that Chevrolet will be launching in 2013.

Chevrolet will also showcase the expanded functionality of an advanced version of MyLink, which will be available first in the all-new 2014 Impala full-size sedan.

“Chevrolet continues to build on the momentum of eight consecutive quarters of record global sales with the introduction of more new products, features and technologies that are designed to offer consumers exceptional functionality, comfort and convenience,” said, Chris Perry, vice president of Global Chevrolet Marketing.

“The Spark EV and next-generation of MyLink demonstrate Chevrolet’s commitment to delivering the advanced technologies that today’s consumers will be eager to adopt and truly value,” Perry said.

The Spark has won over U.S. consumers with its expressive design, roomy interior and MyLink connectivity. In its first three months on sale, the Spark has delivered strong results, particularly in the Los Angeles market.  Building on that success, the plug-in electric version of the Spark EV will offer consumers the same package that has made the gasoline-powered model so popular while delivering the technology and performance of pure electric power.

MyLink currently offers consumers easy-to-use in-vehicle connectivity. With the launch of the 2014 Impala, MyLink adds new levels of personalization and more seamless smartphone integration.

In addition to the Spark EV, other Chevrolet vehicles on display at the LA Auto Show include the all-new Impala, Malibu Turbo mid-size sedan, Sonic RS small car, Traverse full-size crossover and Camaro Hot Wheels® Edition.

Chevrolet Donates 50 Trucks to Red Cross for Storm Relief

1351626326934

Brand sends full-size pickups and vans to sites hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy

Chevrolet today donated 50 Silverado full-size pickup trucks and Express cargo vans to the American Red Cross for use in relief and recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy and other storms buffeting the Eastern seaboard and nearby states.

“It is during disasters like this that we all need to pull together as a country and Chevrolet has a role in that,” said General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “Making these vehicles available quickly where they can do the most good is something we can do right now.”

GM’s OnStar subsidiary is also supporting the initiative by providing each of the donated vehicles with 300 OnStar Hands-Free Calling minutes of hands-free cellular and three months of its Directions and Connections plan which includes turn-by-turn navigation services. Service available via Advisor or by download. The trucks are being pulled from existing inventory at dealerships closest to where they are needed.

In addition to the vehicle donation, the GM Foundation earlier donated $250,000 to the Red Cross Disaster Responder Program, which enables the agency to be ready to provide immediate disaster relief anywhere in the country.  The money is used to shelter, feed and meet emotional needs of disaster victims. The money also helps feed emergency workers, handle inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provide blood and blood products and help disaster victims access other available resources.

“The impact of Hurricane Sandy is being assessed up and down the East Coast and even further west, and the road to recovery will be long for many families,” said Neal Litvack, Chief Development Officer of the American Red Cross. “GM’s generous donation of vehicles and the GM Foundation’s donation of finances will help the American Red Cross to respond with shelter, food and care, aiding affected residents now and after the storm, as they move toward recovery,”

Anyone interested in providing support to hurricane victims are encouraged to  call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make a donation.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu-Inspired Skinny Jeans Debut

2013_chevrolet_malibu

The Isaac Mizrahi clothing line inspired by the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu debuted on Wednesday, featuring items for the "smart, stylish woman."

The items are noteworthy because they include poppy red skinny jeans designed to "conform to any body type." The jeans are priced at $73. There is also a $140 Malibu blouse, a $298 Malibu leather jacket and a $110 Malibu boyfriend watch.

While many automakers roll out clothing and accessories linked to their cars, it is probably the first time one has gone the skinny-jeans route. High-end automakers like Land Rover, Maserati and Mercedes-Benz often feature clothing and watches or links to designers or celebrities such as Victoria Beckham.

However, it is fairly unusual for mass-market manufacturers to hook up with designers and offer more than T-shirts and baseball caps. The move is a clear signal from GM that it is targeting women in its marketing push for the Malibu.

The Malibu clothing line is set to go on sale on October 16 on LivingSocial's Shop in limited quantity, said GM in a statement.

"The 2013 Malibu is a beautifully designed car," said Mizrahi in a statement posted on the GM Web site. "Each piece of my capsule collection was inspired by the features of the car, from the leather seats that feel like they are hugging you, to the ice-blue interior lighting."

The watch's blue face is inspired by the Malibu's interior light.

New Chevrolet Volt App Tracks Charging Costs

Chevy1

OnStar is testing an app for the Chevrolet Volt that tells owners how much it costs to charge the vehicle's battery.

The EcoHub app will be tested and available first to residents of the Pecan Street demonstration project, a smart grid living community in Austin, Texas, General Motors said on Friday. The company said it plans to make the app available to all Volt owners in the "near future."

The new app works by pulling overall home energy usage data provided by a utility or smart meter company. The app also collects Volt charging information from OnStar subscribers and Volt owners who opt in for EcoHub.

"Based on electricity rates, the data is broken down to show the cost of both total energy usage and Volt charging energy use," said GM.

The EcoHub app will include a "Ticker" screen that shows drivers the national values for Total Miles Driven, Total EV Miles Driven and Gallons of Fuel Saved.

The Ticker screen lets drivers "see they are part of a national effort to reduce fuel use by contributing to the growing number of electric miles driven," said GM.

Here are a few easy tips to get your car ready for the change of seasons!

Fall_car_care_tip_photo

Windshield Wipers

Replace old blades. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent — you’ll be surprised how much you use. Carry an ice-scraper.

Lights

Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Tires

Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Let the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don’t forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

Cadillac ATS 2.0T EPA Rated at 31 MPG Highway

Cadillac-ats-production

Three engine options are available in the car, starting with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 202 hp, and offers an EPA rated 22 city and 33 highway mpg. Next is the 2.0-liter turbo, that puts out 272 hp, and gets 21 mpg city 31 mpg highway. Finally, the largest engine in the lineup, the 3.6-liter V6 that puts out 321 hp gets an EPA rated 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

Helping to improve the fuel economy of the ATS are active aero grille shutters that close when the engine does not need any additional cooling, as well as underbody aero shields, which also contribute to a reduction in cabin noise. If that sounds familiar, it’s because Chevrolet also uses the same features on the Cruze Eco to save gas.

The ATS starts at $33,990, and reaches to $42,090.

Folks, time for this week's Care Care Tip: The Key to a Long-Lasting Vehicle

2012_cadillac_cts_coupe

Basic car care is the key to a long-lasting vehicle, improving its safety and dependability. 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your car operating at its best for the long haul:

  1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
  2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.
  3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.
  4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change.
  5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.
  6. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.
  7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting.
  8. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components.
  9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
  10. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.

Cadillac introduces new bumper technology to prevent crashes

Cadillac

Cadillac’s new virtual bumper technology – whereby the car brakes automatically if it senses the driver is about to tap the bumper of the vehicle in front of it – isn’t new. I’ve tested two cars with the technology in the past eight years and both stopped me handily. But the technology should be required on every car sold in America.

The feature is part of the optional Driver Assist Package that will be available for the 2013 Cadillac ATS and XTS sedans and the SRX crossover. How does it work? Like other cutting-edge driver-assist systems, the new Cadillac feature uses sophisticated cameras, sensors and processors -- a collection of advanced technologies that work together -- to keep the car from crashing.

First you get a warning via visual and audio alerts, including one in the instrument panel that shows the relative proximity to an object behind or in front of the car. In case that’s not enough to distract you from whatever else you’re doing beside paying attention to the road, you’ll also get a warning via Cadillac’s Safety Alert Seat that buzzes your rear end. If you ignore those warnings and a crash is imminent, the Automatic Front and Rear Braking system applies the brakes.

The technology comes in response to autobuyers’ desire for more active safety technology – and they want the car to do it. That may sound like the lazy person’s method of avoiding accidents and freeing up more time to pay attention to cockpit conversations, electronics, shaving, makeup, reading, playing air guitar and all the other things people get up to when navigating their cars. But in truth, how many of us pay 100% attention 100% of the time to anything? We’re hardly Zen masters out there on the road – me included. The technology makes sense, will save lives and potentially billions of dollars in insurance payments in years to come.

But such driver assist systems are becoming more widespread and more popular with a broader range of car buyers. According to a recent survey commissioned by Ford, nine in 10 consumers are interested in driver assist technologies. Hopefully, the auto industry will make these systems standard in years to come.

2013 Chevrolet Volt - Review

Rch

The 2013 Chevrolet Volt is the third model year of Chevy's unique range-extended electric car, and after a challenging start and a lot of bad media, it has emerged as the best-selling plug-in car in the U.S.--selling at a faster rate than the Nissan Leaf battery electric hatchback and the new Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid.

The four-seat, five-door hatchback has a handful of tweaks for 2013 that have raised its electric range a bit--from 35 to 38 miles--and boosted its EPA efficiency rating from 94 to 98 MPGe. The odd abbreviation stands for Miles Per Gallon Equivalent--a measure of how far a plug-in vehicle can travel electrically on battery energy equivalent to that contained in 1 gallon of gasoline.

Despite its challenging first 18 months, the Volt is a remarkably good car that's fun to drive, economical, and a credit to its General Motors engineers and designers. Part of its challenge is that it's sized as a compact car, with fewer seats and less luggage capability than the Chevrolet Cruze gasoline model, a four-door sedan that's half its price (or less).

But the plug-in Volt is targeted at an entirely different market than the high-volume Cruze: early adopters, electric-car enthusiasts, environmentalists, and those who like the idea of driving on grid electricity instead of gasoline made from imported oil. It has the highest owner satisfaction ever recorded for a GM vehicle, and its owners are probably its best sales force, walking friends and neighbors one at a time through the mechanics of how a car with only about 40 miles of electric range can, in fact, meet their daily needs and still dispense entirely with range anxiety.

Increasingly, the 2013 Chevrolet Volt is pulling in buyers who never even considered buying a Chevrolet or GM product. Volt owners are fierce and passionate advocates, and they're used to being stopped on the street and explaining the nature of the car with two power sources.

It's the Volt's unique "series hybrid" powertrain, also known as a range-extended electric vehicle, that gives it those dual abilities. The Chevy Volt plugs into wall current—for many owners a standard 120-Volt household plug, otherwise a faster 240-Volt Level 2 charging station—through a port in the left front fender to recharge its battery for 25 to 50 miles of all-electric range. It takes 7 to 10 hours to recharge a fully depleted pack using 110-Volt household current. With a 240-Volt Level 2 charging station, usually installed in the owner's garage, it takes less than half that time.

The Volt's T-shaped lithium-ion battery sits in the wide tunnel between the seats and below the rear seat, powering the 111-kilowatt (149-horsepower) electric drive motor that drives the front wheels. When the pack is depleted, the car's range-extending 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and its attached generator seamlessly switch on, generating more electricity to keep the car in motion for another 250-plus miles. (There’s one exception under which the engine adds power to that from the motor, but never mind—you’ll never know.)

More than 75 percent of all U.S. vehicles travel 40 miles or less each day, so Volts charged up at night may not turn on their engines for weeks at a time. But with the engine on, it'll do 300 miles, then refill the 9-gallon tank, and it'll knock off the same again--with the EPA rating its engine-on operation at 37 miles per gallon. While that's not as good as the 50-mpg Toyota Prius, the Volt is smoother, faster, and a whole lot more fun to drive.

The actual effective MPG a Volt delivers depends entirely on how much the driver can travel on battery power recharged from the grid versus burning gasoline. A handful of Volt owners who plug in regularly, and travel mostly short distances, report effective mileage well over 100 mpg--and a few have complain that the Volt's software maxes out at "250+" mpg.

In appearance, the Volt's chunky, slab-sided design isn't to everyone's taste. The windows are shallow, the cowl is very high, and the tail is high enough that the Volt has a two-part rear window, just like the Toyota Prius. We're not fond of the obviously fake silver grille, its largely blank panel a simulation of the twin-opening Chevy front end. But by now, we're used to the styling, and while the Volt is hardly as iconic as the Toyota Prius, it's noticeable and attracts its own attention.

Inside, the digital instrument cluster and the central display screen have excellent graphics that clearly convey as much or as little operating information as the driver chooses. The front seats are comfortable, though space in the rear is tight, and the controls are easy to understand. The twin-cockpit dash uses many controls recognizable from the Cruze, but in a more upscale presentation. Flashy abstract patterns on door and interior panels are an option, as are a glossy white-plastic dash treatment that looks like nothing so much as an Apple consumer electronics product.

The 2013 Volt is a top safety pick of the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, and received top ratings from both the IIHS and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The battery and electric systems are warrantied for eight years or 100,000 miles, far longer than most gasoline powertrains. Starting with cars built in February 2012, Chevy added reinforcements around the battery pack structure and changed the coolant filler for the pack to avoid the remote possibility of pack fires in the days or weeks after a severe accident. But no Volts have experienced battery fires on the road, and while Chevy is offering a retrofit to owners of Volts built during 2010 and 2011, it's a voluntarily update, not a safety recall.

All 2013 model Volts sold in California and New York are fitted with the extra emissions equipment that qualifies them as "enhanced advanced-technology partial-zero-emission vehicles"--or e-AT-PZEVs. They also come with a longer 10-year/150,000-mile warranty on the battery pack and other mechanicals. In California, that status qualifies Volt drivers to travel in carpool lanes with only a single occupant.

The 2013 Chevy Volt starts at $39,995. A navigation system is optional, joining polished chrome wheels and special paint colors as some of the few options offered on this otherwise well-equipped car. Volt buyers are eligible for a $7,500 Federal income-tax credit for purchasing a plug-in car, along with a raft of other state, local, and corporate incentives.

That's still expensive for a car with less space for people and cargo than the Cruze. But Volt buyers aren't comparing it to the Cruze but to other plug-ins, which for 2013 include the all-electric Leaf, Ford Focus Electric, and Coda Sedan (in California only), and the Toyota Prius Plug-In. In the same category but considerably pricier are the $100,000-plus Fisker Karma, and now the electric Tesla Model S now in production starting at $57,400 for the lowest-range model.

The most important thing to take away about the 2013 Volt is that it is a real car with real-world abilities--not a golf cart, or a science project, or a weird two-seat aero-blob. It has all the conveniences you’d expect in a compact car, plus some you wouldn’t. It’s fast, it rides well, it costs only pennies to run on electric power, and it’s enormously smooth and quiet.
