Performance Chevys Raise $2.14 Million in Charity Auctions

Five Chevrolet performance cars, including the first retail production model of the2014 Corvette Stingray, raised a combined $2.14 million at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector car auctions that concluded Sunday.

Proceeds benefit the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Habitat for Humanity Detroit, the American Heart Association, the Guy Fieri Foundation for Inspiration and Imagination and the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans.

The all-new Corvette Stingray – Vehicle Identification Number ending in 0001 – sold Saturday to businessman and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick for $1.05 million just days after the Stingray’s world debut preceding the North American International Auto Show. The money will go the College for Creative Studies, one of the world’s premier institutions for industrial and transportation design. Corvette goes on sale later this year.

Earlier, an autographed press kit for the Corvette – numbered No. 1 of 2014 – sold on eBay for $4,300 to the Bowling Green, Ky. Chamber of Commerce; proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. The Corvette is built in Bowling Green.

Four other unique Chevys got bidders rolling at Barrett-Jackson, including:

GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson’s Regal Turquoise 1958 Corvette sold for $270,000; funds benefits Habitat for Humanity Detroit’s efforts to improve the city’s Morningside Commons neighborhood.
A 2012 COPO Camaro Convertible sold for $400,000 aiding the American Heart Association. It is the final of 69 COPO Camaro factory drag-race cars built for 2012. It is one of two convertibles built and the only one painted Inferno Orange Metallic.
Celebrity chef Guy Fieri’s personalized 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition sold for $270,000 and benefits Cooking With Kids, a program by the Guy Fieri Foundation for Inspiration and Imagination. Powered by a 505-hp LS7 engine, the 427 Convertible is black with custom yellow stripes – a twist on the yellow-and-black color scheme of his other Chevys.
A 2013 Camaro ZL1 Convertible, the third Camaro ZL1 and first Convertible off the assembly line – sold for $150,000. One-hundred percent of the winning bid goes to the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans, which helps injured veterans compete in mainstream athletics, including marathons. It’s powered by a 580-hp supercharged 6.2L LSA small-block engine.

Today's best supertuners and their machines

 VR1200 Twin-Turbo Coupe
John Hennessey put himself on the map by tuning one of the first Dodge Vipers to enter competition. That machine was featured in publications from Car and Driver to Hot Rod, and Hennessey Performance quickly grew into a go-fast powerhouse. With a 30,000-square-foot facility and an all-wheel-drive dyno, these guys can make just about anything quicker than it was before.
Of Hennessey's supertuners, we're partial to the VR1200 Twin-Turbo Coupe. A Cadillac CTS-V Coupe that features a de-tuned version of the same twin-turbocharged 7.0-liter V8 engine found in the company's famed Venom GT, this 2-door puts 1,226 horsepower to the rear wheels, good enough to bolt to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds.

2014 Cadillac ELR electrifies Detroit auto show

The long-awaited transfer of Chevrolet Volt technology into more upscale threads has become reality in the form of the 2014 Cadillac ELR, revealed Tuesday at the Detroit auto show.
The 2+2 coupe will be built in limited numbers, though Cadillac wouldn't say precisely how many will be produced. It will be assembled at General Motors' Detroit-Hamtramck factory, where the Volt is also built, a short distance from the show.
The ELR runs an extended-range electric powertrain, including a 16.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that offers a pure electric range of about 35 miles, depending on conditions. The car is about 250 pounds heavier than the Volt, primarily due to more upscale packaging, which cuts the ELR's potential range slightly.
“If you want to build a true, premium luxury brand, you have to have these specialized vehicles to create a splash,” said Mark Adams, Cadillac design director.
After electric power is exhausted, a 1.4-liter gasoline-powered generator kicks on to extend range to up to 300 miles. Total system output is 207 hp.
The T-shaped battery pack runs down the center of the ELR. It weighs about 435 pounds, and is capable of 295 lb-ft of torque. It takes 4.5 hours to charge on a 240-volt outlet, or 12 hours on a 120-volt, depending on conditions.
The ELR has four driver modes: sport, touring, mountain and hold. Interestingly, the hold selection allows drivers to use the generator so as to save battery power for times when it can be most effective, such as in city driving.
It's all wrapped in a design that is more than 90 percent true to the original Converj concept from 2009. It features a bold grille, LED lights front and rear, and strong lines and angles through the middle of the car. The ELR rolls on 20-inch wheels and has a dramatic interior that uses chrome, leather, suede microfiber, wood and carbon fiber, depending on the package. A particularly stunning option is the brilliant shade of brown that can be selected for the semi-aniline leather seats. Cadillac's CUE technology is also standard and can be viewed on an 8-inch touchscreen.
The chassis has a HiPer Strut front suspension in front and a semi-independent Watts link configuration in back. It runs continuous damping control, rather than magnetic ride, which is used for many performance Cadillacs and Chevrolets. The steering is a rack-mounted electric power setup, and the brakes are electrohydraulic.
The ELR also employs a regeneration-on-demand feature, which is engaged via paddle shifters. The system regenerates energy and has the effect of slightly slowing the vehicle down.

Cadillac ATS Wins 2013 North American Car of the Year

The 2013 Cadillac ATS luxury sport sedan today was named the winner of the North American Car of the Year award.
A jury of 49 automotive journalists considered every new car released in the past year, and selected ATS as the winner. The award was announced at a press conference opening the 25th annual North American International Auto Show.
"This is a very meaningful honor for the entire Cadillac team, especially the men and women who build the ATS in Lansing, Michigan, and our dedicated and talented designers and engineers,” said Bob Ferguson, GM vice president, global Cadillac. “A car like ATS is the result of incredible commitment and focus. That’s the only method for creating a great performing luxury car."
The new ATS is the lightest car in its class with a unique architecture designed for nimble driving performance. The North American Car of the Year award is the latest in a growing list of accolades for the ATS, which was named Car of the Year by Esquire, and   the Motor Press Guild, as well as several other awards.
A compact sport sedan, the ATS is offered in rear- and all-wheel drive versions, with a choice of powerful and efficient four- and six-cylinder engines. It recently received a 5-Star overall crash test rating in the New Car Assessment Program run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Car cleaning tip - Minimize junk!

Bring It In, Take It Out

Some families have an "if you can carry it into the car, you can carry it out" policy when it comes to car rides. Make your kids responsible for their books, cups, backpacks, balls and papers. Also, keep clutter to a minimum by limiting by limiting them to one item per car ride or make them keep their junk in backpacks.

Cadillac ATS Has Unique PAL for Spirited Driving

Performance Algorithm Liftfoot technology powers through corners

The new Cadillac ATS’s  sport-tuned dynamics come to life with a performance-oriented component that improves acceleration control and handling through curves during spirited driving.

Performance Algorithm Liftfoot, or PAL, detects when the driver demands more performance from the vehicle while taking a curve and automatically drops the transmission to a lower gear to improve acceleration out of the corner.

PAL is paired with ATS models with a six-speed automatic transmission, which engineers have perfected for quick-shift timing. PAL minimizes unneeded shifting and allows the driver to focus on the road and enjoy the ride.

“The ATS is built to deliver inspired driving dynamics when the driver desires it,” said Adam Dean, Cadillac ATS ride and handling engineer. “When PAL is engaged, the driver will notice the ATS kick into a higher RPM.”

When the ATS is in the driver selected “Sport” suspension mode and begins negotiating curves with sufficient cornering lateral force, the transmission computer commands downshifts to ensure the right gear is readily available. The lower gears aid in both braking into and maintaining control through the turn, and then accelerating out of the corner.

With continued high-throttle driving and aggressive braking, the transmission will maintain the lower gears to assist in acceleration and in preparing for the next corner.  When more moderate driving conditions are detected – lower acceleration and cornering – the transmission will upshift sequentially through the gears, and exit PAL mode.

The transmission also features faster shift times, which have been improved to perfect RPM engine matching when downshifting through a corner.

Cadillac engineers refined PAL and other performance features on the ‘Green Hell’ – Nurburgring’s Nordschleife Course – and other challenging roads. Driving enthusiasts are putting ATS to the test. In a recent Motor Trend comparison of six-cylinder versions of the world’s-finest sport sedans, ATS was judged the overall winner. The New York Times review of ATS described it “a blast to drive on the road and track.”
